Believe in Denial: Prologue-Love Stories
You know most love stories are the same. I swear to you that 9 times out of 10 those stories include the phrases “love at first sight”, “knowing right away”, and “the one”. It never fails to surprise me. It always happens. There is no doubt. I can always anticipate it. You know how people say that there aren’t things you can count on in life? Well I say HA to those cynics. I laugh in their faces. This is one thing you can count on. It’s the love story.
The tales could be straight out of those books your mom used to read to you at bedtime when you were little. It’s always about prince charming and true love that conquered all. In these “love at first sight” stories, all you have to do is switch around the part about glass slippers or climbing towers and VOILA. It’s still the same deal. You’ve got your damsel in distress, the white knight, and the blossoming of eternal bliss. These are the type of accounts that either make you go “oh ah” in that stomach flip-flop heart skips a beat type of way, or make you want to wrench and gag in its sweet sugar coatedness.
You know what gets me the most? The moment. The story has to freaking revolve around the damn moment. It’s always about “the moment”. People talk about the moment when they met “the one” as if it was some great enlightenment. For God’s sakes people tie it in somehow to the greatest moments of literary giants. They just seem to take that one instant and rank it up there with the musings of Sophocles or Plato. They contrast it to classic scenes in books. Love is, in their mind, far greater than any historical incidence could ever be. In their own way they make it out to be the greatest thing that has ever happened to mankind. They seem to forget everything else that ever happened in history. All those notions they spent ages learning in lecture halls, things that they soaked up in their expensive education suddenly becomes irrelevant. It gets thrown out the window. Nope, nothing else matters or is as important to them except that one moment when they “knew”. What does Weber or Shakespeare matter when you’ve been enlightened with cupid’s arrow? Rationality suddenly takes a back seat.
In any case it always revolves around the fact that somehow, somewhere, and with someone, something powerful suddenly took a hold of him or her and changed his or her life. It’s always how eyes met, or hands touched. Sometimes they’ll add in the electricity they felt, maybe even some “deep and meaningful” stuff about seeing souls in the depths of eyes. How do people get caught up into all this sappy stuff? I mean come on now. Is true love really “true”? Is there really someone for everyone? Can there honestly be two halves of a soul looking for completion out in the world? Could it be possible that you’ve loved the same person for lifetimes and that in every life you yearn for the day you can meet again? People honestly. And no before you ask I am not in denial. I’m not bitter. I’m living in reality. So don’t write me off okay? I’m just as skeptical and wistful as the next person.
Yes. Love does exist. Masses of people are not wrong. But you know what the truth of the matter is? Love is love. Simple. Straight. No frills. And most of the time, to put it bluntly here, it’s not like a Danielle Steel novel and it certainly is not a fairy tale. This is real life. Love doesn’t always end up like you want it to. It doesn’t always begin perfectly. You don't always start with Once Upon A Time, and sometimes you don’t get a Happily Ever After. Heck, most of the time Cinderella doesn't make it to the ball and Prince Charming puts the glass slipper on the wrong foot.
Love can be crazy. It can be ironic. It can be corny as hell. It doesn't make any sense. It can be hypocrtical. It can be cliche. It can hurt like you wouldn't believe. There are times it tinges on the fringes of regret, and despite repeated attempts to dodge it and save yourself the trouble, you can't escape it. I suppose its that inate need in all of us to find perfection. In the end despite the unknown, the possible consequences, you jump at the chance to find it not because of what it is, but what it could be. Its the possibilities of what's being offered here, the romantic notions, the "rightness" of the situation that prompt even those with all the reservations in the world to just walk out blindly in search for it. You do it because you want what it is. Love is real. And that right there is the honest to God truth. Emotions. It's the reason why people like me become straight up hypocrites. You don't pass up your fairytale when it comes calling.

This is a Justin story. That's not to say the others will be ignored, shoved to the background or made into pure comic relief. Though that does happen sometimes, it is never my goal. Justin's situation just happens to fuel the main plot line of the story. That would be the stalker. And the love interest just happens to be an empath. So there is a little supernatural tossed in here as well.

Fury said to a mouse that he met in the house "Let us both go to the law: I will prosecute you. Come, I'll take no denial: we must have a trial: for really this
morning I've nothing to do."
Said the mouse to the cur, "Such a trial, dear sir, with
no jury or judge, would be wasting our breath."
"I'll be judge, I'll be jury," said cunning old Fury: "I'll
try the whole cause and condemn you to death."
